Our Why

In 2017, after a decade in traditional law firms, our Director and Principal Family Lawyer, Tegan Martens opened the doors to Martens Legal. She was determined to help as many people that she could going through a separation, and to treat them how she would want to be treated if it was her. Helping people through some of the most difficult times in life truly is her passion.

Personally, she also wanted to have a fulfilling and successful career while also being able to show up in other areas of her life – from business owner, lawyer, partner, mum, friend and more! This simply was not possible in a traditional law setting at the time.

Over the past almost 8 years, Tegan is proud to have built the family law firm that Martens Legal is today, with people – both clients and her team – always at the core of everything. She is especially proud of the amazing team of people (both present and past), who have helped to make this all possible, and who are dedicated to helping our clients navigate family law matters with compassion and expertise.

• Assisting in strategic negotiation if an agreement between you and your former partner on all separation matters is not possible;
• Assisting with dispute resolution strategies such as Mediation or Arbitration, with a view to resolving any disputed matters. This includes inviting your former partner to dispute resolution, strategic preparation as well as attending with you at Mediation or Arbitration as your lawyer;
• Preparation and lodgement of Legal Separation Agreements, such as:
  • Consent Orders for property and parenting,
  • Parenting Plans,
  • Binding Financial Agreements,
  • Binding Child Support Agreements,
  • Applications for Divorce,
  • and more!
• Review of Legal Separation Agreements prepared by your former partner’s lawyer;
• Second Opinions if you feel your existing lawyer may not be the right fit;
• Assisting with commencing and acting as your lawyers in Court Litigation in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, if you and your former partner cannot reach an out of court resolution.

We also regularly help couples who are looking to secure their assets by entering into a Binding Financial Agreement, either at the start or during their relationship.
